But the libretto is condemned and the score lost – possibly reworked here and there in later compositions. Claus Guth and Raphaël Pichon\, haunted by this interesting project that had turned into one of the most intriguing failures in operatic history\, have tried\, not to recreate the letter\, but to revive the spirit: to marry a strong\, noble libretto with the most eloquent music. Samson is the chosen of God\, but his extraordinary strength isolates him as much as it marks him out: a succession of failed love affairs turns him into a destructive force\, making this biblical Hercules the first suicidal to be a mass murderer. Supporting Jarrett Ott\, Jacquelyn Stucker and Lea Desandre in the principal roles\, the Pygmalion chorus and orchestra become important actors in a fresco that is both sublime and astonishingly modern.

SUMMARY:Start Again The Lament
DESCRIPTION:I helped artist Taryn Simon realizing her large scale sound installation. \n“In a relentless replay\, the lamentations of professional mourners are broadcast into the reverberating space of Cisternerne. These sonic rituals of grief include northern Albanian laments\, which seek to excavate ‘uncried words’; Wayuu laments\, which safeguard the soul’s passage to the Milky Way; Greek Epirotic laments\, which bind the story of a life with its afterlife; and Yazidi laments\, which trace a topography of displacement and exile. Cisternerne becomes an instrument echoing recitations of loss with a reverberation of 17 seconds. \nAs sound and visiting bodies move through repeating archways\, the installation merges darkness and light\, absence and presence\, singular loss\, and its exponential multiplication. The public is pulled through Cisternerne by lamentations sonically pushing against its walls in cacophony and silence.”

SUMMARY:Doppelgänger @ Park Avenue Armory
DESCRIPTION:With Jonas Kaufmann\nHelmut Deutsch\, Pianist\nClaus Guth\, Director\nMichael Levine\, Scenic Design\nUrs Schönebaum\, Lighting Design\nRocafilm\, Video Design\nMathis Nitschke\, Sound Composition \nA New Commission by Park Avenue Armory \nIn a rare solo performance\, Jonas Kaufmann\, “the world’s greatest tenor” (The Telegraph\, UK)\, takes on the Wade Thompson Drill Hall in a theatrical staging of Franz Schubert’s Schwanengesang (Swan Song)\, directed by one of opera’s most adventurous directors\, Claus Guth\, and designed by Michael Levine. Composed in 1828 in Schubert’s final days\, Schwanengesang is a heart-melting collection of songs that portray a man in despair\, delusion\, and at times\, in ecstasy. The production folds in additional Schubert repertory as well as sound compositions by Mathis Nitschke. Named for the ultimate song “Der Doppelgänger\,” this production stages songs with lyrics from poems by Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine\, works that are the pinnacle of a vocalist’s repertory. The myriad emotions that the cycle runs\, from the jubilant “Liebesbotschaft” to the somber depth of “Der Doppelgänger\,” will display a genre-defying performance by Kaufmann. \n

SUMMARY:1 sqm stopped time. Arkadienfestival 2023
DESCRIPTION:already for the third time the Ebersberger Kunstverein (near Munich) organizes the ARKADIEN-Festival from May 19th! The theme of the third edition “Brave New World” is a reference to Aldous Huxley’s novel of the same name\, which sketches a dystopian future as it becomes more and more reality in the eyes of some. \nI am represented with my commissioned work “1 sqm stopped time”: Closed chambers of 1 sqm footprint stand in the middle of the urban space and invite you to listen. Extremely short sounds are extended to the maximum: the fractions of a second of a gunshot become 10 minutes of music. The surprise of a fist blow turns into a consoling elegy. The moment of an explosion becomes an orchestral state of Wagnerian proportions.

SUMMARY:When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other @ Schauspiel Köln
DESCRIPTION:“When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other” by Martin Crimp\, German premier\, Schauspiel Köln \nDIRECTION: THOMAS JONIGK\nSTAGE DESIGN: LISA DÄSSLE\nCOSTUME DESIGN: ESTHER GEREMUS\nCHOREOGRAFY: TERESA ROTEMBERG\nMUSIC / SOUND: MATHIS NITSCHKE\nLIGHT DESIGN: MICHAEL GÖÖCK\nDRAMATURGY: SIBYLLE DUDEK \nA woman and a man. Did he kidnap her? Is he holding her against her will? Or is it a game? And if so\, which of the two will win? The addition of other people – a housekeeper and two girls – does not create a clear situation. On the contrary: there are apparently no certainties here. And the rules of the game are only there to be subverted with relish in the next moment. The British dramatist Martin Crimp has written twelve variations on an encounter in which the boundary between power and powerlessness is constantly shifting. With abysmal wit and keen powers of observation\, he reveals the contradictions in gender relations and shows how centuries-old power structures are imprinted and live on – if only as a parody.

SUMMARY:Brother Eichmann @ Schauspiel Köln
DESCRIPTION:“Brother Eichmann” by Heinar Kipphardt \nwith JÖRG RATJEN as Adolf Eichmann \nDIRECTION: THOMAS JONIGK\nSTAGE & COSTUME DESIGN: LISA DÄSSLER\nMUSIC/SOUND: MATHIS NITSCHKE\nDRAMATURGY: STAWRULA PANAGIOTAKI \nPREMIERE: 23. Oktober 2021 \nFrom the rehearsals (video by me): \n \n“In 1961\, Adolf Eichmann\, the planner and organizer of the Holocaust\, was sentenced to death by hanging in Jerusalem. In one of the most highly regarded trials of the post-war period\, unbearable details about the National Socialist extermination machinery and its perpetrators come to light for the world public\, because the defendant talks. \nAuthor and dramaturge Heinar Kipphardt – along with Peter Weiss and Rolf Hochhuth one of the main representatives of documentary theater in the 1960s – distills over 3\,500 pages of interrogation and court transcripts into a theatrical text. The play is premiered posthumously in Munich in 1983. “A trial has in common with a play that both begin and end with the perpetrator\, and not with the victim\,” writes Hanna Arendt in her account EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM. Kipphardt’s play brings this perpetrator\, this “brother” (“Bruder Hitler” – Thomas Mann)\, uncomfortably close.

SUMMARY:Lure – a music-theatrical exploration of AI (open studio)
DESCRIPTION:In dialogue with a learning machine: an exploration of music\, interactive theatre and live performance through Artificial Intelligence \nDetailed instructions on how to attend the performance will be sent out to you in advance via email. Please register through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.de/e/lure-a-music-theatrical-exploration-of-ai-open-studio-tickets-128258557799 \n  \nA curious and creative character awakens. Developed inside a computer it yearns to learn. You meet it in our performance. It wants to learn about you and starts a conversation. It tries to express itself by playing with a musician. And it leaves that space to explore the world by itself. \nIn our open studio we invite you to a playful session with music\, performance and collective discovery. You’ll be able to interact with our character Parzival\, a machine-learning model created after the mediaeval adventurer. \nWith our prototypes we study three different artistic and technological approaches. Develop empathy with the computational character by discovering how it learns. Experience its inner workings through theatrical expression. And be touched by its musical sensitivity. \nThe artistic research project “Lure” transfers questions on the topics of human–machine interaction and artificial intelligence to the fields of theatre and music. We will open our studio and show our first technical prototypes and artistic steps as work-in-progress\, in a theatrically staged online meeting. \n“Lure” is a project of Munich composer and theatre maker Mathis Nitschke\, Amsterdam interactive artists Luciano Pinna and Klasien van de Zandschulp\, scientists from the Munich Volkswagen Group Machine-Learning Research Lab (argmax.ai) Patrick van der Smagt\, Djalel Benbouzid\, Nutan Chen and Munich dramaturg Elsa Büsing.  \nwith\nMara Widmann: Narrator\nMartina Koppelstetter: Singer\nMatthias Lachenmayer: Drummer\nKatharina Dobner: Mask and fire design \nBesides our custom development tools we use: Google Magenta\, OpenAI GPT-2\, RunwayML\, AIVA\, Botsquad\, Lens Studio \n“Lure” is funded and supported by the Dutch Creative Industries Fund NL\, the German Fonds Darstellende Künste\, and the Volkswagen Group Machine Learning Research Lab. \nThanks to Pathos Theater\, Mario Klingemann\, Memo Akten\, Vladimir Viro\, Arjan Scherpenisse\, Botond Cseke\, Dominik Theobald\, Milo Schagen\, Michael Schwarzfischer\, Tankred Dorst and Wolfram von Eschenbach. \n

Tendency continuously slightly increasing. A funeral is performed “ex officio” if none of the relatives who are obliged to pay for the funeral are willing to take over the care of the dead. Or if there are no relatives who are obliged to take care of the buried. Or these cannot be located. The audio installation “Requiem for the Disappeared” would like to commemorate these lonely and unnoticed deceased Munich residents. For this purpose\, six biographies were selected on behalf of all those buried ex officio\, for which requiems for the dead were composed. These requiems of the dead are the focus of the audio installation “Requiem für Verschwundene”\, which was originally planned as a theater premiere at HochX. Due to the current corona crisis\, the theater project was transformed into an open-air listening installation. \nTranslated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) \n  \nKonzept und Regie: Gesche Piening\nKonzeptionelle Mitarbeit und Dramaturgie: Katja Huber \nKomposition: Moritz Eggert\, Maria Hafner\, Mathis Nitschke\, Wolfgang Petters\, Manuela Rzytki\, Asmir Šabic\nMusiker*innen: Zoro Babel\, Farandole-Quartett\, Mathias Götz\, Maria Hafner\,\nClaudia Kaiser\, Martin Lickleder\, Mathis Nitschke\, Wolfgang Petters\, Peter Pichler\, Manuela Rzytki\, Asmir Šabić\nSprecher*innen: Maria Hafner\, Andreas Neumann\nInstallation: Jan Ott\nSprachaufnahmen: Manuela Rzytki\nMastering: Zoro Babel\nGraphik und Design: Jeannette Kummer\nProduktion: Ulrich Zentner\nPR & Öffentlichkeitsarbeit: Kathrin Schäfer KulturPR \nGefördert vom Kulturreferat der Landeshauptstadt München.\nIn Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kunstausschuss St. Lukas.\nMit freundlicher Unterstützung durch das HochX Theater und Live ArtA listening installation for those who died alone and unnoticed and for those who will die alone and unnoticed in the future by Gesche Piening\, with a composition by Mathis Nitschke (among others)A listening installation for those who died alone and unnoticed and for those who will die alone and unnoticed in the future by Gesche Piening\, with a composition by Mathis Nitschke (among others)

SUMMARY:Mephisto (premiere)
DESCRIPTION:by Thomas Jonigk after Klaus Mann \nDIRECTOR: Thomas Jonigk\nStage and costumes: Ric Schachtebeck\nMUSIC | TON | VIDEO: Mathis Nitschke\nDRAMATURGY: Thomaspeter Goergen\nLIGHT: Christian Franzen \nThe fascination of the downfall that one even denies seeing eye. The eroticism of evil\, sex appeal of destruction. Babylon Berlin\, the Pompeii between the world wars. Russian gangs\, German fascists* inside\, international careerists* inside\, party people between Moka Efti and Berghain\, conspiracies\, party cries\, the latent excitement: everything can fly around our ears … Klaus Mann outlined in his novel the timeless dancing on the volcano and the Fall of the Sin of the Glamorous. A panorama of his contemporaries*\, artists* and intellectuals\, children of the gods of the Golden Twenties\, who didn’t want to let up on the intoxication when swastikas were already blowing over Babylon. Above all\, however\, the text is a portrait of a famous actor: Gustaf Gründgens. As Henrik Höfgen in the novel\, he is too devoted to life on stage to notice that death has long been sitting on the floor. He plays his biggest role so perfectly that he falls for his mirror image of the theatre: Mephisto. Goethe’s sophisticated devil\, who ends up in real life as the monkey of true hell. He just wants to be loved\, but without responsibility. And at the end he suspects that the hype of the one is paid for with the suffering of many. “I’m only an actor\,” he exclaims\, representing all of us\, us affluent children\, narcissists\, lightly offended and beloved would-be women. Yes\, just an actor. As long as spotlights glow and masks shine. As long as the curtain doesn’t fall. \nTranslated with www.DeepL.com/Translator

SUMMARY:Only you know if we made it or not! (World Premiere)
DESCRIPTION:At some point in an unimaginably distant future: the people of tomorrow\, who have saved themselves to the beginning of a new era by the downfall\, float for generations on the sea of plastic waste from past epochs. Where ruins\, mosaics and statues have been left over the millennia\, only mountains of plastic remind us of our glorious century of progress. Right in the middle: them\, the remaining ones. They know: nothing. And in the rubble of yesterday they set out on a search for a Genesis\, for the guidance for a new better world. \nEmre Akal and his team ask for it\, starting from an omnipresent end time mood: What comes after the imaginable future\, after the collapse of liberal democracy and old Europe as we knew it? In a formally abstract world of images\, they let the future rub against the past\, dig the people of tomorrow in the rubble of memory in order to create the design of a society for tomorrow from the ruins of the past – always remembering: What are we leaving behind as society today\, the people of the future\, and will we have learned from our mistakes? What remains of… us? \nWith Jasmina Musić\, Melek Erenay\, Željko Marović\, Çağlar Yiğitoğulları\, Adi Hrustemović\, Erkin Akal\, Mara Widmann | direction and text: Emre Akal | Artistic collaborators*in the direction: Paulina Platzer\, Valentin Walch | Dramaturgie: Guido Huller | Artistic collaborators*in the dramaturgie: Antigone Akgün | Stage design: Xaver Unterholzner | Costume and make-up: Melina Poppe | Visual Artist/ Stage: Kazim (artist duo: Mehmet and Kazim) | Music and Sound: Mathis Nitschke | Lighting Design: Rainer Ludwig | Press Relations: Kathrin Schäfer | Production Management: Rat&Tat Kulturbüro \nTranslated with www.DeepL.com/Translator

SUMMARY:RE:ECM @ Storage\, Seoul
DESCRIPTION:In this group exhibition at Storage by Hyundai Card in Seoul\, six artists reflect on the meanwhile 50-year-old oeuvre of the record label ECM Records. Instead of – as the poster suggests – presenting relics and devotional objects from the history of ECM\, we try to pour the meaning and effects that ECM has had and still has on our work and life into our own artistic positions. \nIn my sound installation “Small Places” the listening human becomes the object of art. Almost incidentally\, it plays the complete catalogue of ECM (we talk about more than 8 weeks of continuously playing music). How this looks and works\, and how you can participate in it from a distance\, I will explain in my next post after the opening on 17 October. \nIn a second work in collaboration with digital artist Lars Ullrich\, we analyze the horizontal movement within the music\, the “flow“\, and transform it into suggestive digital animations that draw the visitors fully into the music. Also here visual material after the opening. \nCome and see us! From 17 October at the Storage by Hyundai Card in Seoul\, South Korea.

SUMMARY:Rückkehr nach Reims @ Schauspiel Köln
\nBESETZUNG \nCampbell Caspary\nAntonia Bockelmann\nBarbara Krebs\nNicolas Lehni\nJustus Maier\nSabine Orléans\nJörg Ratjen\nNicki von Tempelhoff \nRegie: Thomas Jonigk\nBühne: Lisa Dässler\nKostüme: Esther Geremus\nMusik: Mathis Nitschke\nChoreografie: Theresa Rotemberg\nLicht: Jan Steinfatt\nDramaturgie: Sarah Lorenz
